Short BiographyDr. Md Aftabur Rahman is a highly skilled Geotechnical Engineer, and his expertise spans subsurface investigation, slope stability, ground improvement, and geohazard assessment, where he has made notable contributions to both research and practice. Alongside, Dr. Rahman enriches academia and research as a Professor of Civil Engineering at Chittagong University of Engineering & Technology (CUET), Bangladesh.
Dr. Rahman’s academic journey reflects his dedication to advancing geotechnical engineering. He earned his Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering from Yokohama National University, Japan, with support from the prestigious Monbukagakusho (MEXT) fellowship. Earlier, he completed his M.Eng. in Civil Engineering at Saitama University, funded by the ADB–JSP fellowship, and obtained his B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from CUET, where he secured top in his class. His doctoral research in Japan provided important insights into landslide hazards, particularly by demonstrating how the flow path of detached landslide masses affects velocity estimation. This advancement addressed gaps in existing methods. At Saitama University, his work on the response analysis of buried pipelines under fault rupture attracted significant attention and has been widely cited. On returning to Bangladesh, Dr. Rahman directed his research toward practical solutions for local challenges. His investigations into ground-improvement methods using locally available waste materials offer cost-effective approaches for construction while maintaining safety standards. His studies on liquefaction hazard assessment for Chattogram have been particularly valuable for urban planning and disaster preparedness to one of the country’s most vulnerable cities. Dr. Rahman has also played a leadership role in fostering academic exchange. He served as the secretary of two international conferences in Bangladesh, in 2018 and 2020, which brought together experts from around the world to discuss pressing issues in geotechnical engineering. In addition to teaching and research, he contributes his expertise through the Bureau of Research, Testing, and Consultation (BRTC) at CUET and as an independent consultant. His professional services include sub-soil investigations, slope stability analysis, foundation design and vetting, and advanced assessments of geotechnical hazards. |
